== History ==
Brookwood School was founded in December 1956 as Essex Country Day School by a group of parents who felt there was a need for another school in the area. An old estate property was purchased and the school opened in the converted stables in September 1957. In the early days, registration took place under a maple tree by Pip Cutler, the founding headmaster.
Brookwood School had an initial enrollment of 65 students in 1957. The school has expanded its facilities and student population and in 2010 has approximately 408 students from diverse backgrounds enrolled in the lower, middle, and upper schools.〔AISNE http://www.aisne.org/brookwood-school/〕
Headmaster Cutler retired in 1973 but the values he stood for continue to serve as the guiding principles of the school. The fourth and current headmaster is John Peterman, who has held the position since 1992. In the fall of 2014, Brookwood named a new Head of School to start in July, after Peterman retires.〔http://www.salemnews.com/news/local_news/article_073c0855-559d-5afe-8448-c8ca12ad8cd4.html〕
